Introduction

Bangalore, also known as Bengaluru Kannada is the capital of the Indian State of Karnataka. Bangalore is nicknamed the Garden City and was once called a Pensioners Paradise. Located on the Deccan Plateau in the south,eastern part of Karnataka, Bangalore is Indias third most populous city. There are a number of expats from across the world living in the city, thanks to the growing presence of Multinational Companies.

Today as a large city and growing metropolis, Bangalore is home to many of the most well,recognised colleges and research institutions in India. Numerous public sector heavy industries, software companies, aerospace, telecommunications, and defence organizations are located in the city. Bangalore History

Bangalore, the Garden City Of India and capital of the State 1000 m above level was founded in 1537 AD by Vijaynagar chieftain Kempe Gowda. The legend goes that the King Veera Ballala of Vijaynagar once lost his way while hunting in a forest. Hungry and tired, he came upon a lone hut in the thick of forest where he met an old woman. When he asked for food she gave him some baked beans Benda Kalu in Kannada . To the King this humble meal tasted better than those served in the palace. To commemorate the incident, he called the place Benda Kaluooru place of baked beans and this in time transformed into Bangalore. In the 18th century it was the stronghold of Haider Ali and Tipu Sultan. Today it is the fifth largest city of India and the countrys main industrial city which includes industries like aircraft, telephones, electronics etc.

Bangalore Fair and Festivals

Bangalore celebrates regional, national and religious festivals with pomp like other parts of the country. Dussehra, The pride of Karnatakas festivals is Dussehra. It is a celebration that lasts for ten days. The rulers of Vijayanagara Empire used to celebrate Dussehra with remarkable brilliance. The rulers of Mysore continued the tradition. The Maharaja of Mysore used to hold a Durbar for 9 days and on the 10th day went in a procession on a caparisoned elephant. With the ending of the royal rule, a picture of Bhuvaneshwari, the patron goddess of Karnataka, is taken out in procession. It is a unique and significant festival of the Hindus. Yugadi, The Kannadiga new year day of Ugadi that falls on the second half of March or early April is celebrated with devotion and delight. Bangalore also celebrates the national festivals of Independence Day, the republic day and the birthday of Gandhiji. Religious festivals like Makara Samkramana, Sri Ramanavami, Janmashtami, Ganesh Chaturthi, Deepavali, Christmas, Eid,ul,Fitr, Eid,ul,Adha etc. are celebrated in harmony.

CLIMATE

Situated at a height of 949 meters 3113 ft. above the sea level, the city is blessed with salubrious climate throughout the year. Till the beginning of the nineties, most of the homes in Bangalore didnt need fans. In summer while the rest of India wilted in the heat, Bangaloreans would snuggle under warm blankets at night. The city has a dry tropical savanna type of climate. The rains are very frequent and the summers are warm. Winters are cold. But no weather goes to its extreme. One can visit the city any time of the year and enjoy the pleasant climate. Today, in summer the maximum temperature can rise to 36C while the minimum temperature can drop to 20C. In winter the maximum temperature can rise to 27C and fall to less than 17C. In spite of the maximum weather of 36C, Bangalore is considered to be one of the coolest cities of India. The monsoons begin in July and carry on till September. This is a lovely time when everything turns lush green. About 85percentage of the rainfall is recorded between 4 and 7 in the evening. Hence carrying an umbrella would be a wise thing to do. Bangalore has a pleasant climate. The city has a lot of greenery with trees lined up along both sides of most of the roads. The numerous gardens and parks, streets lined with trees are very soothing in what would have been a jungle of concrete.
